Teach-In Program
What is Reach Out Now?
Reach Out Now is a collaboration by the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
and Scholastic Inc., to provide school-based, underage alcohol use prevention
materials in time for Alcohol Awareness Month each April. This two-part set of
materials is designed especially for use by fifth- and sixth-grade students,
their families, and their teachers, and is sent to fifth- and sixth-grade
classroom teachers nationwide each year.
What is a Reach Out Now National Teach In?
Teach-Ins are an opportunity for prominent national, youth, State, and local
leaders-using a research-based curriculum and other helpful materials provided
by SAMHSA-to teach fifth and sixth graders, parents, teachers, and the community
about the dangers of underage alcohol use and encourage young people to make
healthy decisions.
Each lesson lasts for approximately 45-60 minutes. At the end of the
lesson, students should be able to:
SPEAKERS - How can I present at a Teach In?
If you would like to be a presenter at a Teach In, please email us at
teachin@hawaiicounterdrug.org.
Presentation materials can be found on the right-hand side of this page under
the LINKS section. We will also provide incentive materials for the students.
The Teach In presentations last for approximately 45-60 minutes.
Our office will provide a list of available schools that are requesting a
presenter for a Teach In. Once you have chosen one or more schools we will
contact the school and provide you with the contact information for the school(s).
SCHOOLS - How can I host a Teach In?
If you would like to host a Teach In for your 5th grade classes, please
email us at teachin@hawaiicounterdrug.org.
Please provide three available dates and times in the month of April (if possible).
A Teach In is approximately 45-60 minutes and can be done
as individual classes or presentation style in locations such as the cafeteria
or library.
The Hawaii National Guard Counterdrug Program will notify your school of who
your presenter will be and what date(s) and time(s). Note: if your school
would like to request a specific presenter please let us know so we can provide him/her
with the Teach In materials.
