Underage Drinking Prevention - Social-Marketing Multi-Media Campaign

More Than You Think Logo

The More Than You Think (MTYT) campaign is all about letting Hawaii's youth make positive decisions. Our research shows that Hawaii teens think that most of their peers are drinkers, when the truth is, most aren't. This means a majority of teens are already making good choices - we just need to remind them. MTYT focuses on the positive aspects of being a teen and provides tools to help them continue to make good decisions about alcohol and everyday life. And, although our goal is to prevent underage drinking, we present just the facts and leave it to the teens to make their own decisions.

This website and the More Than You Think campaign is funded through a project of the National Guard Hawaii Counterdrug Support Office (NGHI-CSO). The Counterdrug Support Office is housed at Dept. of Defense, Hawaii National Guard. The Counterdrug Support Office coordinates Hawaii Partnership to Prevent Underage Drinking (HPPUD) organization which sponsored a statewide community mini-grant through the Photovoice Project. The Photovoice Project added to the development of this campaign.

Our research shows that 90% of Hawaii teens believe that people important to them don't want them to drink alcohol, and the majority, almost 70%, have made the choice to not drink. The Stronger Influence campaign is about informing parents that they are the number one influence in their children's lives. The goal of our campaign is to present facts about alcohol and provide parents with tools to facilitate clear, honest and direct conversations with their children about underage drinking.

This website and the Stronger Influence campaign are funded through a project of the National Guard Hawaii Counterdrug Support Office (NGHI-CSO). The Counterdrug Support Office is housed at the Department of Defense, Hawaii National Guard. Hawaii National Guard provides counterdrug support to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, and community based organizations.

Brig. Gen. Joseph J. Chaves, commander of the Hawaii Army National Guard, his wife and Counterdrug Support Program staff, SSG Bernie Bumanglang were among the few volunteers cooking a little over 200 burgers at the successful pre-Thanksgiving event held on November 20, 2011 at the U.S Veterans Center in Kalaeloa, Barbers Point.

“I told him that if anyone complained about the burgers it was him not me,” Bumanglang said jokingly to General Chavez.  “He just laughed..but we had a good time.”
